Today was our first day working

in the new community garden at
Sunnyside. The weather was good
to us right up until the last 10 minutes
and we got lots done. The youngsters
managed to make 6 bird box`s and
had a great time taking part in the
organised activities.

Gaener had lots of activities for them
all to get involved in. They had sheets to
colour in of all the birds and had a
worksheet where they had to try to
identify as many different types that
they could spot in the forest, trees
and the gardens surrounding the park.
Gaener also gave them lots of facts and
other great activites to take part in.

Thanks to the bigger young folk that were there everyone
got a shot at making a bird box as well. They did a great
job of advising and holding the wood whilst the younger
ones had a shot with the electric screwdriver or the
hammer and nails. They managed to get all the box`s
completed without the need to call an ambulance or a mad
dash to casualty.

Thankfully because of the efforts
of many involved with today we were
all able to get a tea or a coffee and to
sample some of the great home baking
that was brought along for all to enjoy.
The kids had plenty to eat and drink as
well when they decided to take a break
from all that was going on.

Today will be the first of many activity days that the
community council will hold in the garden. There will
be much to do in the future to get the garden completed
and then to maintain it, hopefully for many years to come.
If you would like to help in anyway at all then please get
in touch with Gaener, Gareth, Anne or Margaret or through
the website. We would be delighted to have your help.
Keep up to date with how the garden is developing by
checking this page on the website regularly.

The kids worked hard making the bird box`s and had a
great time trying to spot the different birds, learning all
about them from the fact sheets a colouring them in. Again
a great big thanks to all the kids and adults that took
part in helping with making the community garden a reality.
We are grateful to Leader for funding this and for the
efforts of all involved. Special thanks to Anne for her
tireless work in securing the funding.

We finished just in time. As I said at the start the weather
WAS good to us except for the last 10 minutes.

Our second activity day in the Community Wildlife Garden on saturday the 13th of August

The sun shone for the community wildlife garden
treasure hunt on Saturday 13th August. Each team
picked a name that included a woodland tree or flower.

Teams followed clues and used their maps to navigate
round the woods, answering quiz questions as they
went. Each question was worth 1 gold piece. Everyone
learnt something new about the woods and the plants
and creatures that live there. Did you know that a baby
hedgehog is called a hoglet? Or that the tough stems of
some mosses were used for basket weaving?

The teams also collected a variety of
objects, with different textures, as evidence
of their quest: sticky sap; crumbly earth;
tickly grass. They were also meant to find
something smelly. One team brought a
photograph of a horse poo instead!

Drinks and delicious home baking were
enjoyed in the new pop up gazebo
while the points were tallied up.

Team Buttercup won with 18 points. Team Oak
Tree were runners up with 16 points. Everyone
who took part received a Treasure Hunt
certificate.

Another great day was had by all that came along.

Keep checking back for our next update.
